Blog Action and Handwashing Day

by Peter Korchnak on October 15, 2009

Today is BAD – Blog Action Day. “Blog Action Day is an annual event that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day. Our aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion.” This year’s issue: Climate Change. As of this writing (afternoon of October 14th), 7,220 blogs are registered to participate.

I’m participating this year for the second time, and like last year, I wish to add a somewhat contrarian voice.

  1. Is climate change an issue that needs more awareness raising or discussion triggering anymore? Climate change is a top issue of the day and I challenge you to find anyone who is not aware of it. Right now, we need action.
  2. I really don’t care about climate change. I’m writing a separate post about this, so for now suffice it to say that climate change is a symptom, like disease. Talking about or treating the disease is inferior to addressing its root causes and advancing health.

Global Handwashing DaySo, like last year, I’d like to point your attention to another observance. October 15th is also Global Handwashing Day. A celebration of the United Nations handwashing initiative, Global Handwashing Day highlights that “[h]andwashing with soap is the most effective and inexpensive way to prevent diarrheal and acute respiratory infections, which take the lives of millions of children in developing countries every year.â€

Watch the video and wash your hands.
