Cloudy strategy forecasts and blue-sky contingencies

by Peter Korchnak on December 6, 2008

I looked out into the backyard this morning. December in Portland, Oregon, has its moments.

Then, I opened The Oregonian newspaper (I’m old-school that way). The forecast read:

When this happens in your marketing, do you ditch the strategy, fire your consultant, and throw up your arms in despair? Probably not, as you shouldn’t. If you’ve planned for clouds and the sky turns out blue, you’re actually better off than if the opposite happened. It’s a gift, enjoy it. In fact, if you’ve ever taken a plane, you know blue sky is always out there, beyond the clouds. Keep it in mind, and keep a few alternative initiatives up your strategy sleeve for blue-sky contingencies.

My wife Lindsay and I planned to clean the house today. It can wait. We’re going for a walk and hot dogs and a pint of Mirror Pond at Zach’s Shack.
