Rice, beans, and marketing strategy

by Peter Korchnak on October 19, 2009

Rice and beansI ate burritos all weekend. As mundane as it may sound, various combinations of ingredients and modes of their preparation provided for a different meal every time. And I got the five colors out of each meal.

Burritos are something we fall back on in my family – they’re easy and comforting. No need to conjure complicated recipes – just throw together whatever we have and wrap it in a tortilla. Rice and beans and a few other makings are always around. Fast preparation, low cost of inputs, quick satisfaction, what’s not to like? Until the next meal, that is.

In the now-ending recession, struggling or even just cautious businesses hunkered down and ate the rice and beans of marketing tools. A website, a promotion, or an email coupon are always on hand; fast preparation and quick results made them all the more attractive. Until the next go around, that is.

But just as burritos are part of our health strategy – “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”; eat regularly and slowly; balance work and life with exercise – your marketing tools must align with the big picture of your marketing strategy.

What’s on your menu?

I friend went deep sea fishing and gave me tons of fish, so lots of fish right now. Being the frugal person that I am!
