That’s right. Walmart and its kind can make your business more sustainable. In fact, it already has.
Before you determine who you are as a business, you need to know who you are not. Research and analyze your competition and their positions in your customers’ minds – that’s who you don’t want to be. If you’re building your business around triple bottom line values, Walmart is at the pinnacle of what you don’t want your company to look like.
After you determined who not to be as a business, stipulate who you do want to be – develop your position, making sure it’s different from your competitors’ and valuable to your customers by serving their needs. With the Walmarts of the world around, it’s easy to develop a business that’s more sustainable. (Of course, you must position yourself against your direct competitors – other sustainable businesses.)
All your competitors can help you be a better business; start with Walmart and work your way, elimination-style, through the marketplace back to your business. Good positioning starts with a negative definition.
How have your competitors made you a better or more sustainable business?
